Chicken

Now up until a few weeks ago if I had used the word chicken for the title of a blog post you could be sure you’d be finding a recipe for a delicious chicken dish. However on Elizabeth’s birthday (15! Can you believe it???) we acquired 6 bantam chickens. As a joke I went through the Kentucky Fried Chicken drive thru and picked up one of their buckets to “wrap” Elizabeth’s presents in. Hee, hee.

We have been bitten by the chicken bug. One of us however was bitten especially hard. I’ll give you a hint as to who. He’s about 3 feet tall and just turned 3 years old (again, can you believe it?). Finnigan is madly in love with his peeps.

Elizabeth and little Drumstick

As it was Elizabeth’s birthday she got first choice of the bantams and chose a lovely white Silkie whom she has named, “Drumstick”. I love this kid, seriously, she is going to be one awesome adult. We also have two buff brahmas and three golden sebrights. All of them are sweet and amazingly funny. I had no idea chickens had such personalities! They are so funny.

My goodness they have grown

Seannan chillin' with the peeps

For Finnigan’s 3rd birthday he received three standard size peeps who will lay us some beautiful colored eggs. He has a Welsummer, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, and a Cuckoo Maran. The Maran will lay eggs the color of chocolate. As Finny has no clue what we meant when we asked what he wanted to name them, Elizabeth and I named the girls. Elsie/Welsummer, Sylvie/Wyandotte, and Lady Godiva/Maran.

Lady Godiva aka Georgia

Miss Elsie

We are really enjoying watching them go from adorably, heart melting cute balls of fuzz to these funny little feathered balls of personality. We will begin construction on the chicken coop soon, and by the time the girls are ready to go outside it will be ready. Until then the moment Finnigan wakes in the morning I am dragged downstairs, bleary eyed, to “Go see the peeps, Mama!”

*LMAO* Totally LOVE how you wrapped up her bday present! Hysterical! I’ve been fighting off the chicken bug for a few years now and I think (soon) I won’t be able to fight it off anymore!
